The first billion years: new insights from geochemistry

چکیده

Prologue: (V)ast globes. . . after reaching the last stages of ebullition, were coveredwith scoriae like bubbling foam. And the crust which covered the molten matter of the globe and which hardened from the fused condition would be like scoria, as happens with metals in the furnace. If then the great framework of the earth, the exposed rocks, the imperishable silicates, are almost entirely vitrified, does that not prove that they arose from a fusion of bodies, brought about by the powerful action of nature’s fire on still soft material? It is everywhere true that the most simple and primitive material in the composition of the earth, that which represents most accurately the true nature of rocks, is that which most resists fire, which melts [only] under an excessive heat, and finishes by vitrifying. . .

The Mesoproterozoic – no “boring billion”

The authors show that the Mesoproterozoic (1.6-1.0 bn year before present) was no “boring billion” but a “bustling billion” - not only with Stromatolites and their apex in the Calymmian and Ectasian but also with the presence of multicellular organisms. To make it visible a graphical reconstruction was created. For a long time, it was assumed that there existed no noteworthy biosphere on Earth ...

Teachers’ Perceptions of and Concerns for the Implementation of the New First Grade English Textbook at Iran’s Public Junior High Schools

Changing the English textbook of the first grade junior high school at Iran’s public schools after 27 years has sparked researchers’ interests in conducting evaluations of the new English textbook to get insights into its strengths and weaknesses. In line with this trend, this study aimed at evaluating the new textbook (Prospect 1) from teachers’ perspectives. To attain this objective, 30 junio...

E Evolution, Lunar: From Magma Ocean to Crust Formation

The lunar crust provides a record of the planetary formation and early evolutionary processes and contains a wealth of information about the origin and evolution of the Earth-Moon system (e.g., Taylor 1982; NRC 2007; Canup 2008, 2012; Cuk and Stewart 2012; Young et al. 2016). Understanding these processes is crucial for the reconstruction of the early evolutionary stages of the Earth, e.g., the...

Forecasting Capital Investment for Fixed-Telephony Network Switching Equipment in Tandem with NGN Migration Using Cobb-Douglas Model

This paper tries to estimate the capital investment required for the fixed-telephony network switching equipment as demanded by the fourth national development plan. As a first step, the Cobb-Douglas model is used as a successful demand forecasting model to estimate the demand over the target years. Then, an architectural plan is developed for the fixed-telephony switching network that takes in...

Comment on "Heterogeneous Hadean hafnium: evidence of continental crust at 4.4 to 4.5 Ga".

Harrison et al. (Reports, 23 December 2005, p. 1947) proposed that plate tectonics and granites existed 4.5 billion years ago (Ga), within 70 million years of Earth's formation, based on geochemistry of >4.0 Ga detrital zircons from Australia. We highlight the large uncertainties of this claim and make the more moderate proposal that some crust formed by 4.4 Ga and oceans formed by 4.2 Ga.
